What's the best menstrual cup?Q: I'm considering the Mooncup because I like what I hear best but I've heard the Diva cup is good too ... advice? personal preferences?
A: They're both great cups. (I'm assuming you mean the Mooncup UK, and not the American, silicone version of the Keeper. The Keeper company has used some shady business tactics to keep the Mooncup UK out of the U.S., though the UK version was around well before their's. Still, if that's the cup the works for you, go for it.)
Here's some things you should know about these cups:
1. -The DivaCup is the longest cup out of all the brands up cups. This is good because that means it has the largest capacity, without being very wide. It's also bad, because it might be too long. That seems to be the #1 issue about the DivaCup. If your cervix moves down very far during your period, this may cause discomfort. Knowing your cervix position is somewhat important when purchasing a cup.
- The Mooncup UK is one of the shorter cups, which means that cervix position really doesn't matter much with this one. However, it does mean that how much liquid it holds (capacity) is less than the DivaCup. This is the #1 issue with this cup. You might have to change it a few hours earlier than you would the DivaCup, depending on your flow.
- The MoonCup U.S. is the second longest after the DivaCup.
2. - The DivaCup has smaller anti-suction holes, which means that it has stronger suction. This is good for some women, because it means that they get a good seal. This it also bad for some women because it creates an odd pulling sensation when removed, but when removed correctly, it doesn't matter at all.
- The Mooncup UK has slightly larger holes, and more of them (Diva= 4, Mooncup UK= 6), so the suction is greatly reduced, and easy to release.
- The MoonCup U.S. has very small holes with similar suction issues like the Diva.
3. - The DivaCup is one of the softest cups out there, so that adds to the comfort of wearing one, but can hinder the cup popping open on it's own. You may have to coax it open. I have to with mine, but it's not problem at all. At least that way, I can make sure I have a good seal.
- The Mooncup UK has a stiffer rim, which makes it a cup that pops opens very easily. This can be a problem, because women may feel the rim. The cup part is soft. Softer than the DivaCup in my opinion.
- The MoonCup U.S. is somewhat similar to the Mooncup UK in this way.
4. Then, there's price.
- The DivaCup is one of the cheapest cups out there. Shop around, google the cup. Check eBay. I got mine for $22 including S&H ($17.49 + S&H) from OrganicPharmacy.com. There are probably places where you could get it even cheaper. Just wait for sales. I know that OP.com's prices fluctuate weekly. Check the adds to the right of this answer. There are many legit stores with great prices.
- The Mooncup UK is a little more expensive, even on eBay. Still, you're saving money either way, so if this is the cup you want, go for it. If money's a big issue, there's a cheaper alternative to the Mooncup UK called the Femmecup. It's almost identical, but generally runs $10 cheaper.
- The MoonCup U.S. can be expensive, but shop around eBay, and google the cup for better deals.
Well, I hope this helped! If you have anymore questions, visit MenstrualCups.org. This site helped me choose my DivaCup, and I couldn't be happier.
