LYRIC HG APPLICATION NOTES
Directionality:
All cables are directional. Drawn copper elicits a grain structure with a chevron shape, clearly visible under a microscope. Each run of Evidence Audio cable is listened to and tested for directionality.
Once directionality is established, the shield is attached at the “receiving” or “destination” end such, that noise is drained to the path with lower impedance. Between a guitar and amplifier, this is often at the amplifier end. It is very often the amplifier end when the cable is used between a preamplifier and an amplifier.
When working with raw cable, the “receiving” or “destination” end of the cable is identified as follows:
Pull the cable from the spool. The end in your hand before you cut the cable is the “destination” side. The end where you make the cut is the “source” side.
For example prepare the cable such that the destination is connected to the amplifier, and the source side is connected to the guitar.
Break in:
Cables sound best after carrying a signal for approximately 40 hours. This is due to the dielectric forming. As the conductor’s insulation material stores and releases an electric signal, its molecular characteristics stabilize with regard to how they store and release the energy applied by the conductor. Expect any cable to sound its best only after passing a signal for 40 hours. Note that (approximately) 80% of the change occurs during the first 10 hours a signal is presented to the dielectric. Don’t expect too much after that.
Wiring Instructions:
For instrument or unbalanced terminations with ¼” or RCA plugs:
1) Connect the white lead to the positive or “tip” terminals at both ends
2) Connect the black lead to the negative or “ring” terminals at both ends
3) Connect the shield to the negative or “ring” terminal at the DESTINATION end.
The shield is cut off completely at the source (or guitar) side. On the amplifier side, half of the shield is cut away, and the other half is twisted together and attached at the same spot as the black lead.
For XLR or balanced terminations
1) Connect the white lead to Pin #2 or TIP at both ends
2) Connect the black lead to Pin #3 or RING at both ends
3) Connect the shield to Pin #1 or SLEEVE at both ends
IMPORTANT NOTE: There is a black “skin” around the white and black leads that is conductive. Make sure that you trim away this skin so that it does not make contact with the other connections on the plug.
Tip: When working with the outer braid it is helpful to wrap a small piece of thin (Scotch) tape around the cable after you cut the cable. This holds the braid together and keeps it from fraying. When you use your jacket cutter to open the cable, simply cut through the tape and the braid together. When you pull off the jacket that you need to reveal the conductors, the braid will stay together on the cable where you attach the plug.
